Most miserable marriages problems are already far beyond saving, but there is always that chance, especially when there are children involved. When children are involved in a marriage that has gone south, everyone suffers. If in many cases when there is a belief that the marriage is salvageable, by all means try and make another go of it.

Remember to stop and think about how things were before you got married, is he the same person? are you the same person? If he was cruel and abusive then, and things got worse after the marriage and you stayed things aren't likely to get any better now, as you saw personally, they got worse. The anger and abuse increased and got worse as time went on endangering you and the children.

If you loved each other then, more than likely you still do, so saving your marriage is something that the both of you will have to work at to work out if you still think saving it is worthwhile.

There are some things that you need to ask yourself such as are you the only one that he abuses or are there others? Is there a faade that he puts on for others which gives them the impression that there is nothing wrong or that you are the problem. If he is one of those behind the door abusers you may not want to continue the marriage.

He will need to be as committed to saving the marriage as you are for things to work. Through all the things that you have lived and been through and given up and into, pondered over and cried over, is he still the person that you wish to stay and grow old with.

Staying in a marriage where neither one is happy and no longer compatible is how heartaches are made. Be truthful with yourself, these are questions that only you can answer because no one knows your true feelings but you.
